Juniors Section Taster Day 1 Congratulations to the Junior Section Organisers |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Golf Team would like to congratulate our junior section organiser Brett Walker and his team of helpers who today hosted the first of three taster days planned for this season. Brett reported that notwithstanding the poor weather restricting the sessions to the use of the range and indoor putting, fourteen young golfers took part in the morning event and ten in the afternoon session. From the feedback the young golfers all enjoyed themselves and expressed a wish to want to come back again. A big thank you goes to the team of helpers Alan Edwards, Martin Power and Elin Jones for attending in the morning and Louise Davies, Jennifer O’Sullivan, Helen O’Sullivan, Jean Barratt and Elin Jones for running the afternoon session. A lot of hard work has gone into arranging these sessions and it is great to see young golfers enjoying our first class academy facilities and making use of the excellent tuition from our PGA Professional Clive Coombs. The second taster day is scheduled for next Saturday 1st June. |

Saturday - Knights vs Garnant Home
Captain Brett Walker reported that despite the score everyone had a good day without too many issues in fielding a team, well that was until Chris Pither realised he didn't know what day of the week it was….literally! Thanks go to Jason Evans who stepped in at short notice and to those who again made themselves available. Regrettably the team lost 3½ - 2½. |

Brett had a word for his Vice-Captain Cliff Webb who is proving that he is more than capable of rising to the challenge of Knights Captaincy and leading by example. Unfortunately, he also proved the previous day that he wasn't capable of rising to the third rung of his ladder without falling off!! With his dodgy shoulder and scuffed eyebrows, I'm pleased to report that he not only gallantly struggled through 18 holes on Saturday but that he also played the next day. Dosed up with horse tranquilisers, he managed to attend his pairs away day at Builth Wells where he and Julia scored 33 points with two blobs. Well done Cliff. Brett's final mention is for his playing partner Keith Lewis for his excellent performance and his words of inspiration. Brett was having a bit of a mare in the middle of his round when these reassuring and immortal words were uttered (edited version)….."Oi you…pull your flipping finger out, I've been carrying you all day". Priceless!! |

Saturday - Tigers vs Milford Haven Home
In their first home match of the season the team hosted the current Dyfed League Champions, Milford Haven. Captain Paul Davies reported that the team were expecting their opponents to turn up with a strong low handicap side and with a few of the CGC regulars being unavailable, our team sheet contained a slightly combined higher handicap than usual. |
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Due to the recent long dry spell the course was playing very hard, fast and unpredictable and to some extent this took away the teams home advantage. Going 4-0 down early on, it was always going to be a tough ask to get anything out of this match but fair play to the last four pairs they all stuck to the task admirably and with two outstanding birdies by Chris James and Carwyn Evans on the par five 18th, both reaching the green in two, this proved decisive. The tail wagged and the last four pairs managed to win their games that secured a halved match which finished 4-4, well done team. Captain Paul Davies thanked his teammates for their support and commitment, with a special mention to Martin Dean who stepped in at the last minute, due to a player having to pull out though injury. |

Cup - CGC A Team | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
On Tuesday the A-Team travelled to Llanishen GC for their away match. Before the match Captain Huw Rees had to adjust the pairings and on a short but tight course this away fixture was always going to be tough and that is how it turned out with the home team winning the tie 2&1. |

Bronwydd Cricket Club Golf Day Another satisfied society….! |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Last Friday CGC had the pleasure of again welcoming Bronwydd Cricket Club and hosted their annual golf day. With the sun shining and twenty four ball teams taking part in the Texas scramble event, everyone had a great day and particularly the Goldsmith family who took the majority of the prizes. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Andrew Goldsmith’s team took the first prize with 55.6 nett, Nicky Goldsmith’s team came third with a nett score of 57.4 and Joan Goldsmith’s team won the ladies prize with a nett score of 64.5. The second place prize went to our own team of Gerald Vaughan, Carl Evans, Tim Harries and Paul McCall with a nett score of 57.3. Paul McCall also won nearest the pin on the 9th putting his ball 3ft 6ins from the flag and Jamie Dean shared the longest drive with James Bryon booming their drives up the 18thfairway and very nearly making it to the ridge ending up 213 yards for the pin. Bronwydd’s organisers believe that this was the fiftieth year running that this event has been held in Carmarthen and for that CGC are obviously extremely grateful and very pleased with the continued support. After the event Bronwydd confirmed their advance booking for the same date next year. The Golf Team would like to thank the greenstaff and catering teams for their efforts in delivering another satisfied society day, well done everyone. |

Out on the course its an early start….
On behalf of the members, the Golf Team would like to thank our green staff team for their hard work and dedication. As a consequence of the recent dry spell last, Saturday's work started very early at 2:30am to make sure that the greens were adequately watered as can be seen from these photos taken at around 4am. |
