Golf Home Nations Inter-Club Championship Final Morgado Golf Resort, Algarve, Portugal Our Juniors did us proud…

Team CGC brought their campaign to a close on Monday with a hard fought Welsh derby against Builth Wells played on the Morgado course.  The team had given shots against each of their four opponents and this tie against Builth was no different.  Over the six legs a total of 50 shots were being given but despite this the team managed to win 3½ - 2½ and to take fifth place in the overall competition.

Throughout this competition the team have played brilliantly in each tie and the club are extremely proud of how well they represented club and country.  Junior organiser Catrina Thomas and her team of helpers have worked tirelessly during the campaign and did a fantastic job of managing the team during tournament.

The club would like to thank our young team for representing the club with distinction and for their efforts and endeavours during these finals.  We are extremely proud of your achievements, you are all a credit to the club.

Besides attending the gala dinner and getting the team home safe and sound Catrina is standing down as junior organiser having been involved since 2015.  In her first year Catrina took team CGC to the four nation’s finals with several of the current team.  Under her leadership the team have won the Dyfed junior order of merit almost every year and Catrina has seen many children come through during her years of involvement.  Over the last couple of years Catrina has focused on the junior team with Brett Walker taking on the role with young newcomers to golf.  With this year’s finals being played in January and not March as in previous years coordination of the trip has been a big challenge with the limited period of time since the team qualified.

The club would like to thank Catrina for her hard work during her time with the junior section and in taking the team through to this year’s final with distinction.

Quiz Night Success….

A big thank you from the Entertainments Group to members and guests who supported the club and attended the quiz night last Friday.  A great turn out with 74 people taking part testing their general knowledge and at some point during the evening suffering the frustration of knowing the answer but not quite managing to get it down on paper.

Congratulations to Clive and Carwyn Evans for presenting the quiz brilliantly and thank you to Martin & Sandy for catering for everyone.

The winning team was the Harries family, team H4 comprising Haydn Harries, his wife Karen and daughters Rach and Beth who achieved an outstanding total score of 218 points.

Update from the Directors

Disabled Access….

Following the recent AGM decision to adopt the option of a stairlift, the trading directors are now in the process of obtaining building regulations approval with the local authority. Once this is obtained and appropriate fire officer approval is received, the facility will be installed.  A power supply has been fitted in readiness and a deposit paid to secure the best price from the stairlift provider.

Out on the course……

Tree Damage

The very strong 50 mph winds over the weekend regrettably took their toll on some of the trees around the course and the green staff team (Andrew, John and Sam) had their work cut-out at the start of this week tidying up the broken limbs and branches.  Notwithstanding this on Monday the full course was in play including all 18 greens and was looking fantastic which is a credit to the team.

Improvement Work

On Wednesday two of our hard working seniors got stuck into the path from the 14th green to the 15th tee to fill in the shuttering with chippings.  The members owe a debt of gratitude to Mick Fenney and Hywel Morris for giving up their free time to improve the course for all of us.   To protect the area around the 14th green members are requested to use the path and not take trollies beyond the front of the green whilst the ground conditions are wet/muddy.

Sadly our flag is at half-mast again….

In remembrance of one of our long standing members Mike Cronin our flag is currently at half-mast.  Mike sadly passed away on Friday 18th January at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen and is survived by his wife Olive and son Mick and daughters Frances and Tina.   Prior to retirement Mike was a member of Oxfordshire Constabulary and Thames Valley Police before he transferred to Dyfed-Powys in the 1970s. He was a member of National Association of Retired Police Officers and until recently, regularly attended meetings and coffee mornings.   The funeral will take place at 13:00 hours on Tuesday 5th February at the Catholic Church, Union St, Carmarthen SA31 3DE.  Donations to Parkinson's UK through the funeral director, Peris Rice, 25 Meysydd y Coleg, Carmarthen SA31 3GR   Our thoughts and condolences are with Mike’s family and friends.
