Dear Member

Driving-in-the-Captains Golf Day
Last Saturday our new season got off to a great start with 80 players taking part in the golf event and 108 guests attending the evening function with entertainment provided by ABBA tribute band Bjorn Belief.  The day could not have gone any better, weather was fine and the band were brilliant.    The Section Captains would like to thank Andrew and the greenstaff team who presented the full course in excellent condition (and its only March!!) and everyone who played and supported the event.   The Entertainments Group would like to thank members and guests and the table captains for their fantastic support and also to pay special thanks to Sandy & Martin and the catering team for the great job they did in looking after everyone.
Last Saturday we demonstrated what a great club we are all privileged to be part of, let’s hope that everyone is thinking positively about the new season ahead of us.

Last Week’s Results
Thursday - Seniors Individual Stapleford 3 Divisions
The weather was the winner!!  The day started misty but deteriorated so severely that during the afternoon, play was temporarily suspended and eventually cancelled completely for safety reasons due to poor visibility caused by fog.  There was some disappointment particularly the players who were nearing the end of their round and potentially had good scores in the making.

Saturday Captains Driving-In Shotgun Start
With 80 players taking part all of the tees were occupied with double groups on the par five 6th and 18th.  The entries were divided equally into four sections, Mixed, Knights, Seniors and Tigers.
To add some fun to the event and maintain the interest of those who did not have an outstanding score secret partners were drawn in each section.
The two best scores won the prizes, £15 each for the winners and £10 each for the runners up, congratulations to the prize winners.
Nearest the line on the 18th was won by Jane Ingram and nearest the pin on the 9th was won by Dai Thomas both receiving a sleeve of balls.
Mixed Section Score Prize
1st Ann Morris & Nick Ingram 71 £15 each
2nd Helen O’Sullivan & Olive Corner 66 £10 each
Knights Section Score Prize
1st Jeff Harries & Mick Fenney 73 £15 each
2nd Fred Steel & Andrew Jones 70 £10 each

Monday - Seniors Qualifier
20 players took to the course and enjoyed the spring weather and Mr Consistency again took the honours with a very fine score:
    Score
1st  Graham Williams 40 Points
2nd Dave Danskin 39 Points
3rd Simon Barratt 38 Points

Tuesday - Ladies Australian Spoons Foursome Qualifier
Lovely day, warm and sunny with six pairs taking part and the result of the competition was:
   Team Score
1st  Jane Lindquist & Brenda Richards 36 Points
2nd Christine Soons & Christine Rees 33 Points
The remarkable news is that for the second time in the space of four months Delyth Rees had her second hole-in-one this time using a 5 iron on the 13th.   It takes most golfers a very long time....if ever in fact to achieve a hole-in-one and Delyth who only started playing the game less than two years ago has now managed two, the first back in November on the 7th.    Wow…what a fantastic achievement, congratulations to Delyth.  In the clubhouse to celebrate Delyth’s outstanding accomplishment lots of Prosecco was consumed by the ladies.
In addition, to thank the ladies for their kindness and generosity on the occasion of her recent 80th birthday and for their support over the years whilst she held various offices, Ruth James provided tea and cake.

Sadly our flag is at half-mast again….
It was with great sadness that that the club received news this week of the passing of one of our long standing members, Mr Geoffrey Gordon Green….better known as Jim.   Jim was raised in Nottingham and joined the Royal Navy, serving for 25 years attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer and whilst stationed in Norway with NATO he met and married his Norwegian wife Synove.  They had three children, James, Gill and Lise and moved to Carmarthen from Hampshire and he joined the golf club in 1994, becoming Seniors Captain in 2001.
A true gentleman, Jim enjoyed life to the full and, together with Synove participated in most of the functions at the Club.  He had not played golf for some time until recently due to a hip replacement but was looking forward to full participation this year notwithstanding attaining 80 years of age.     He will be sorely missed by all who knew him and as a club our thoughts and condolences are with Jim’s family and friends.
